According to a The Edge Market, 59% of Malaysian firms are expected to encounter ransomware attacks in the near future. In order to deal with this, businesses may have to confront these criminals on their territories, with the dark web being used to communicate and perform ransomware transactions.
So what exactly is the dark web?
Surface Web
The surface web or the open web is the portion of the web that is available to the general public through search engines such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc. Accessing surface web websites is made possible due to the indexing by search engines through visible links.
Deep Web
The term “deep web” refers to all web pages that are not indexed or unidentifiable by ordinary search engines. The content on the deep web is usually intended for private use, so it requires access permission and password to bypass protection. This includes the content of your inbox, social media accounts, banking details, legal files etc.
Dark Web
Similar to the ‘deep web’, the dark web is also part of the internet that isn’t visible to conventional search engines. It’s not accessible by normal browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer that people use daily. To access the dark web, a special browser called Tor is required.
“The dark web is not like the internet, where we can conduct a simple keyword search. Many of these dark web forums are outside of our scope, meaning that we will never have a full picture of what kind of leaked information is out there,” said Mr. Fong Choong Fok, CEO of LGMS Sdn. Bhd.
Mr. Fong Choong Fook, CEO of local penetration testing firm LE Global Services (LGMS), believes that the cybercriminals will still employ dark web as their main toolkit due to its additional layers of encryption applied. “The dark web will always have a place because there will still be circumstances in which hackers wish to remain anonymous.
“When it comes to ransomware, hackers nowadays will not just ask for ransom any more. They will make a copy of your files and publish them on the dark web, because it is still the best platform to do so due to its intractability. If they own an onion site, they can host the confidential information for as long as they want.
“Contrast this with Pastebin. The victim can file a complaint to Pastebin and request for its data to be taken down. There are legal means for it to do so. In the end, there are pros and cons for each platform. If the information is hosted on Pastebin, it is accessible to anyone. If [the perpetrator] chooses to put it on the dark web, only people with knowledge of the stolen data can access the information. They serve different purposes,” says Mr. Fong.
There are many steps you can take to protect yourself.
